What is the difference between PET and RPET?

What is RPET?
RPET is the short name often used for Recycled Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET). It is the one of the world’s most common plastic resins. When you see the word ‘RPET’ it simply means that the PET in the product has come from a recycled, pre-existing source.

What is PET?
PET is a strong, durable, clear material that is used to produce items such as sparkling drinks bottles, water bottles, food jars and clear plastic cartons. PET is a thermoplastic, which means it can be easily moulded to a desired shape when heated but when it cools down again it retains its strength. It is lightweight, non-toxic and highly durable, which is why it is the food and drink industry’s packaging of choice.

PET is recyclable. The material is cleaned and reground into flakes or pellets which can be fully recycled into a huge variety of products including car parts, insulation, flooring materials, underlay and polyester for clothing.

With the addition of approximately 30% virgin PET it can be made into plastic sheets, this uses 50% less energy than making PET from scratch. 1st Packaging then uses these RPET sheets, die cutting, creasing, and gluing to create more recycled transparent plastic boxes.
