ASDA’s “Extra Special” Gammon Ham

Our design team initially came up with various styles of loose inserts to hold the Gammon ham in place, but eventually the clever use of an integral insert extending off the carton, was the answer.

For ASDA’s “Extra Special” Gammon Ham, the challenge was to develop a carton that would securely hold the product while also providing strong shelf presence and clear visibility of the contents.

Our design team initially explored a number of different options, including various styles of loose inserts to hold the Gammon ham securely in position. Following a series of design considerations and practical trials, we developed a more integrated solution. The final design incorporated a clever integral insert that extends directly from the carton, creating a secure and effective way of supporting the product without the need for additional loose components.

The carton was produced using 500 micron PVC, selected for its excellent clarity and strength. This combination provided the pack with maximum product visibility while maintaining the structural integrity required for a large and substantial product. The clear construction also allows the Gammon ham to remain the focal point of the packaging, giving consumers a clear view of the product at the point of purchase.

As well as meeting the visual requirements of the pack, the design needed to be practical and efficient during packing. The use of soft creases helped to ease the packing process, making the large carton easier to handle and assemble while maintaining a clean and consistent finished appearance.

The finished pack demonstrates how thoughtful structural design can combine functionality, product presentation and ease of manufacture. By integrating the insert directly into the carton, we were able to create a secure and visually appealing solution tailored specifically to the requirements of the product.
